Anna's Analogy
written by Anna Shields

If I asked you what does the word SEEK mean, what would your answer be?

SEEK is a word that is not used very much unless referring to scripture. SEEK is such a small word to mean so much. I knew the definition was to look, however, I didnít really grasp itís full meaning until I pulled out my dictionary.

SEEK - To go in search of: look for, strive for, try to get or obtain, to endeavor or try. To ask or inquire for; request. To go to. To make a search of.

Search - The act of seeking or looking diligently. Investigation; inquiry. A critical examination or scrutiny. To look through or explore thoroughly in order to find something. To subject to an examination. Probe. To penetrate or pierce. To learn by investigation.

Diligently - Showing perseverance and application in whatever is undertaken; industrious. Pursued with painstaking effort.

Diligence - Persistent application to oneís work or duty; persevering effort.

Probe - to explore to examine thoroughly, to penetrate, to search. That which proves or tests.

Scrutiny - The act of scrutinizing; close examination or investigation. A searching look or glance.

Scrutinize - to observe carefully, to examine in detail.

Obtain - To gain possession of, especially by effort; acquire; get.

SEEK is in the Bible KJV 233 times. seeking 14 times, search 46, searched 20, searching 8, look 153, looked 142, examine 5, examined 6. I am sure there are also other words to describe SEEK that I did not SEEK. We may ask someone to help us look for something but we never ask anyone to help us SEEK, which is what we really want them to do. That would be to search until we find it. For example, if we are at an outside gathering and I lose my car keys, I don want you to just help me look for them. I want you to SEEK for them until they are found. I want you to look diligently. I want you to make a critical examination of every area where they could be. I want you to explore every spot of dirt, every blade of glass, etc. where they could be. I want you to put out a persevering effort.

Okay, letís take it up a notch and make it a little more dramatic. Instead of car keys being lost, letís use an example of a small child. This could be your child, your grandchild, your niece or nephew, etc. Now, how would you like us to go about finding this child? Would you like us to just look around or would you want us to SEEK?

Now that we understand the meaning of SEEK. Letís see what we should be SEEKING.

1st Peter 3:11 Let him eschew (avoid, turn from) evil and do good let him SEEK peace and ensue (pursue, follow) it.

Okay, it says let him (or her) who is him? The verse right above it says

1st Peter 3:10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him........

So if you want to love life and see good days SEEK peace. Whatís the alternative: You can hate life and see bad days. I choose to love life and see good days so I should SEEK peace.

Proverbs 8:17 I love them that love me and those that seek me early (diligently) shall find me.

It is important to know who is speaking in this verse. If you will look in Proverbs 8 and start with verse 1, you will see that it is wisdom crying out.

Proverbs 18:18 "Riches and honor are with me, yea durable riches and righteousness. 21. That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance and I will fill their treasures.

So if you need some riches, honor, substances and treasures, SEEK wisdom.

This may seem a little strange to you that things can speak to us but they do it all the time. For instance, look in your wallet or your checkbook. It speaks to you. It is either saying you can buy what you want or need, or it is saying you canít pay your bills. When you look at your watch or clock, it is telling you that you have time to spare or that you are late. Things speak to us all the time. The gas pumps and higher prices have been speaking to all of us lately.

Jesus answered a fig tree. (Mark 11:14) It spoke to him. It told Him that it was not giving Him anything to eat. In Mark 11:13 Jesus tells us to speak unto the mountain (problem of great size).

What about Jesus, Did Jesus SEEK anything while here on earth?

Luke 19:10 For the Son of man is come to SEEK and to save that which was lost.

John 5:30 ..... because I SEEK not my own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

What should we SEEK?

Luke 12:29 And SEEK not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. 30 For all these thing do the nations (people) of the world SEEK after, and Your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things 31. But rather SEEK ye the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you.

So if you need some things (and God knows you do) SEEK the kingdom of God (His ways).

Hopefully, the word SEEK will have a whole new meaning for you. Thanks for reading.
